What is the trick with using a box scraper. I borrowed my neighbors today and used it with the scarifiers at there deepest position. I not sure I got the desired results. Are you supposed to use it with the scaifiers all the way up for leveling and when do you use the scaifiers and how deep?

I use the teeth in one operation to break up and loosen the soil and then I raise them and use the blades to level and move what I have loosened.
How deep? As deep as you can get your tractor to pull it or as deep as you need for the job at hand.
I don't guarantee that the above is right, just that is works. ....

If the soil is soft and you just want to do some leveling, then normally you would not need the scarifiers down. However, if the soil is hard and/or you need to dig down several inches to move a lot of soil then you would put the scarifiers down until you get the soil loose down to the desired level. Then you can raise them back up for the final leveling. ....

In general scarifiers are used only when a scraper blade won't cut fast enough on its own even with an aggressive blade angle (shortening the top-link increases the cutting action). A lot about using scarifiers has to do with the length of grades that are being cut and where convenient places are to dump full boxes. If it cuts too fast then there are more dump places. If it cuts too slow then it takes more passes to finish a grade. That sort of thing determines how fast you want the box to fill.
With the soil here I can adjust the cut enough with the blade angle so scarifiers aren't needed. I use mine mostly for cutting turf because I run out of traction using the blade if the turf isn't cut first. I also use them for shallow excavations since I want to cut full boxes over the length of a short excavation so I can pull full boxes out of the hole.
In terms of depth, the one thing you don't want to do is set the scarifiers deeper than the final finished grade you want. If you're shooting specific grades, you may start out with them down but then pull them up as you get closer to the new grade level. It's pretty easy to get too deep with them and sometimes taking the few extra passes without using them ends up saving time. ....
